Using different layouts

I am using 3 different layouts on my site to divide the site into different services, each service has a different navigation and colour theme which works well.

However when I link to a portfolio item, the page uses the default layout. Is it possible to set different layouts for the portfolio pages to reflect the relevant section of the site?

we are very sorry but this is impossible. It is possible to set only one portfolio layout per whole site.

OK, but on the portfolio item pages there is the option to select a custom layout, can you tell me what this is for?

If there is any way this could be made to work it would be really useful!!
