How to make favicon-background transperent?

I have a Circle as my Logo and wanted to make it my favicon as well so I tried croping the image to a circle and make it into a .ico file, which apparently is a file type used for favicons. But I always get black corners around the Logo. Or in other words the background isnt transparent but black instead.
