"I'd like to update the theme and when I do this is the message I get.

this message could mean that your license key is used on more than one domain.

It's telling me, {"error":"No registered licenses for this purchase code and username"}

I just bought a license a few minutes ago. Should it take any time to know that?

If it says that your license it not registered anywhere then please check if the license you pasted on your website. Try also to deregister and register again your key in your betheme dashboard.
