That is great news! It seems to trigger the maintenance issue only when multiple plugins are being updated so it takes a longer time ...1 plugin or 1 theme does not seem to trigger the .mainenance issue as per above. I will keep watching the webs…

Update - seems our modsecurity was too strict :( re the page post disappearing... We are not sure yet if the .maintenance issue has resolved we are waiting till its quiet to test updating plugins and themes again.
