The issue appears to be a conflict with the Jetpack plugin - specifically the option for 'Lazy Loading Images' as it is resolved when switching off lazy load. Thank you for your time and advice.

I've resolved this now. For anyone else with the same issue, there was conflicting CSS making the total width of the content and sidebar too wide to float left and right. (Image)
